American rapper A$AP Rocky has revealed that his mother had long hoped he would end up in a relationship with global music star Rihanna, even encouraging him to date her while he was still involved with another woman.
Rocky made the disclosure during an interview with The New York Times, where he reflected on his long-standing friendship with the Barbadian singer before their romantic relationship began.
According to him, he and Rihanna were “just friends” at the time, and he had no intention of taking things further despite his mother’s advice.
The rapper explained that his mother repeatedly insisted that Rihanna was “the right one,” describing her as genuine and encouraging him to pursue her instead.
However, Rocky said he believed both he and Rihanna were not emotionally ready for a serious commitment or family life at the time.
“Rihanna has always been my boo. I always messed with her,” Rocky said.
“My mother used to tell me, ‘I know you like this girl you’re with, but I want you with Riri.’ I kept saying Rihanna was just a friend, but my mom insisted she was a real one. Mothers know best.”
Rocky added that he is grateful he did not rush into a relationship with Rihanna earlier, noting that the timing of their romance played a major role in its success.
“I’m thankful our relationship started when it did,” he said.
“Any time before that, I don’t think I was ready, and I don’t think she was either.”
A$AP Rocky and Rihanna grew closer after he joined her Diamond Tour in 2013. The pair later became one of the world’s most talked-about celebrity couples.
They welcomed their first child in 2022, their second in 2023, and their third child in 2025.
