Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson for the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, warned Igbo people in Lagos against “interfering” in politics in the state.

This is as the collation and presentation of the just concluded March 18 governorship election in the state are ongoing.

With the results announced so far, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is in the lead.

Onanuga, the director of media and publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, issued the warning in a tweet via his official Twitter account, @aonanuga1956.

He said, “Let 2023 be the last time of Igbo interference in Lagos politics.

“Let there be no repeat in 2027. Lagos is like Anambra, Imo, any Nigerian state.

“It is not No Man’s Land, not Federal Capital Territory. It is Yoruba land. Mind your business.”

Unapologetic Spokesperson

The days leading to the governorship election were marred by tribal violence both online and offline.

There were also reports of the Igbo people planning to take over Lagos with the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

Mr Rhodes-Vivour is facing this accusation because he contested with the name Chinedu Rhodes-Vivour on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019.

The statement of the APC’s PCC spokesperson received backlash from social media users.

However, Mr Onanuga is unapologetic about the statement and has made that clear in a fresh tweet.

“Let me make myself abundantly clear: the views I express on Twitter are my personal views.

“I don’t owe anyone any apology for addressing the existential threats of our people.

“I am after all first of all a Yoruba, before being a Nigerian,” Onanuga said.

A former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, also urges citizens of “Igbo extract” in Lagos against making the election into a tribal issue.
