The delegation, which included the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III went to Niger to engage in fresh round of negotiations with the military junta in the country under the leadership of General Abdourahmane Tchiani.

But the delegation, which was scheduled to meet with Niger Republic Coup Leader, General Tchiani, was received by the Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine.

The meeting with representative of the troubled West African Country reportedly lasted about 90 minutes.

It is unclear why Abdulsalami’s delegation could not meet with the junta but there are unconfirmed reports of mutiny by the presidential guard of Niger Republic.

The ECOWAS delegation also led by Abdulsalami had failed to meet President Mohamed Bazoum and the coup leader.

Tichiani later apologised when some Nigerian clerics met with him last weekend, saying they did not meet the delegation out of anger.

General Tchiani explained that it was painful that ECOWAS did not even try to hear their side of the story before ordering sanctions against them and issuing an ultimatum for them to leave office.

The coup leader added that they were angry, but he however apologised to President Bola Tinubu.
