The New Tariff

This decision comes after approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The tariff for Band A customers has been slashed from ₦225 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to ₦206.80/kWh.

The announcement was made by Olufadeke Omo-Omorodion, spokesperson for the IKEDC, in a notice issued on Monday, May 6, 2024.

This move aims to ease the financial burden on Band A customers while ensuring continued access to electricity.

The company guarantees a minimum of 20 hours of power supply daily for customers on Band A feeders.

Bands Exempted

However, it’s important to note that this tariff reduction only applies to Band A customers. Tariffs for customers in other bands, including Bands B, C, D, and E, remain unchanged.

This adjustment follows the NERC’s decision in April to increase the electricity tariff for Band A customers from ₦68/kWh to ₦255/kWh.

While this hike did not affect other customers, Band A customers expressed dissatisfaction with the increased tariffs, citing financial strain.

The issue of electricity tariffs has been a topic of debate, with Band A customers urging the government to reconsider its policy.

Despite these concerns, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, warned during a recent meeting with the Senate Committee on Power that failure to implement the electricity tariff hike could result in a total blackout across the country within the next three months.

In response to customer feedback and regulatory considerations, the IKEDC’s decision to lower the tariff for Band A customers reflects an effort to balance affordability and sustainable electricity supply.
