A lot of comparisons have been made as to why Abuja is a better place to live than Lagos.

While some people say they are in love with the serene atmosphere of Abuja and cannot trade the peace they enjoy living there for anything, others are of the opinion that Lagos is where the real show of city life is.

The first time I visited Abuja, I felt so weird.

The question I kept asking myself was, “How can a place be this calm?”

Everything seemed abnormally normal.

There was no jumping of buses like I was used to in Lagos.

A day after I arrived in Abuja, I had a meeting to attend, so I went to the bus stop and flagged down a bus from my end of the road.

Apparently, I needed to get to the other side of the road to board the bus.

To my utmost shock, the bus driver patiently waited for me to cross the road.

I took off from where I was, racing to catch up with the bus, as was the culture in Lagos, where I came from.

A Cool State To Live In

A million thoughts were running through my head as I was speeding towards the bus: “This is very unusual.” “Am I safe?” “Could this be a kidnapping attempt?”

When I reached the bus, I scanned through  the faces of the passengers thoroughly to be sure I wasn’t about to fall into a trap. The ‘one-chance’ (bus robbery) thing we hear everyday in Lagos forces everyone to grab street sense.

When I finally sat down, the passengers had a smirk on their faces.

Some couldn’t hold their laughter as one of them voiced out and asked, “Are you just coming from Lagos?”

I replied that I was new in “their land,” and we all laughed about it.

Indeed, Abuja is a cool state to live in.

A place away from the hustle and bustle of Lagos, a saner climate in Nigeria where you can drive without the fear of touts

Boundaries are respected to an extent, and noise pollution isn’t the order of the day.

Abuja And Lagos

Despite all the advantages mentioned, I found myself missing Lagos.

It was hard for me to adjust to the Abuja atmosphere during my few days there.

I don’t know if it’s because I was born and brought up in Lagos or the fact that I love a life of great activity and a bit of “drama.”

I rounded up all I had to do in Abuja and ran back to my beloved Lagos after a week.

Which state would you rather live in?

Abuja or Lagos?
