Bovi Blames Distractions for Super Eagles’ AFCON Exit

Nigeria’s quest for a fourth continental title ended in Rabat after the Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties to the Atlas Lions, following a goalless draw in regulation time.

Reacting in a video broadcast after the match, Bovi claimed the players were distracted by social media attention and excessive praise from fans.

He also suggested that unresolved issues around unpaid match bonuses may have affected their passion and performance on the pitch.

According to Bovi, representing the national team comes with a responsibility that goes beyond personal interests or off-field challenges.

He urged players to avoid accepting national team invitations if they are not ready to give total commitment to the country.

“Football is the only thing that unites Nigeria,” he said. “So dear Super Eagles and intending Super Eagles, understand that when you play for Nigeria, regardless of how the NFF treats you, you have the power to unite the nation.”

While expressing forgiveness toward Samuel Chukwueze for missing a penalty during the shootout, Bovi stressed that players must understand the weight of wearing the national jersey.

He warned that chasing personal glory ahead of collective success often leads to failure.
“Don’t come to the Super Eagles if you know you are not ready to give everything for the nation,” he added.

“If the NFF delays your payment, let it go. Social media has distracted you, and the praise has gone to your heads. Fans don’t like you; they like what you do.”
