Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has revealed how choosing the right record label can shape an artist’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Mental Health In Music
During a recent conversation on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan, Savage reflected on her years at Mavin Records and described the strong support system she enjoyed there.

She explained that she only recognised the true value of that support after leaving the label.
Whenever online controversies overwhelmed her, she said she would go straight to the room of label boss Don Jazzy.
There, she would sit with other Mavin artists, share her feelings and receive encouragement from the people around her.

As a result, those conversations helped her handle pressure and emotional stress more easily.
She added that the atmosphere at Mavin gave artists a sense of comfort and belonging.
Foreign Label Experience
However, Savage said her experience changed after she joined an international label.
According to her, many foreign labels focus heavily on business goals and pay less attention to the personal struggles artists face behind the scenes.
Because of this, she said she misses the family-like environment she experienced at Mavin Records, where artists could openly express themselves and support one another during difficult moments.
Tiwa Savage joined Mavin Records in 2012 and later moved to Universal Music Group in 2019.
