President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted presidential pardon to 175 Nigerians, including late nationalist Herbert Macaulay and Major General Mamman Vatsa.
Others pardoned include Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, and members of the Ogoni Nine.
The decision followed recommendations from the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by the Attorney-General, Lateef Fagbemi.
The committee reviewed 294 cases, granting full clemency to 82 inmates, sentence reductions to 65, and commuting 7 death sentences to life imprisonment.
Among living beneficiaries is former lawmaker Farouk Lawan. Tinubu said the pardons reflect compassion, justice, and national reconciliation.
