Bright Chimezie Laments Decline Of Meaningful Music Among Today’s Artistes

Speaking on the CreativTea podcast, the highlife legend acknowledged that while the current generation is making commercially successful music, their songs often lack substance and messages that can stand the test of time.

Chimezie rose to prominence in the 1980s, reflected on his own career.

Also, he cited his 1984 classic Respect Africa as an example of meaningful music that remains relevant decades later.

Music is more profitable now than in my time. The only problem I have with the present crop of artistes is their lyrical content. In terms of rhythm and every other thing, they are doing quite okay. But what message are they passing to society?” he asked.

The singer further challenged younger artistes to consider the longevity of their work.

Some of the things we sang then stick. These days, I ask these boys, the things coming out of your mouth, when your music is 40 years old, will you sit with your children and be proud of it?”

While praising their creativity and success, Bright Chimezie advised today’s artistes to prioritise lyrics with depth and meaning.
