The Nigeria Police has finally shared its own side of the story about the arrest of Chude Nnamdi, a Twitter influencer with the handle ‘@chude__’.

They say he was arrested for cyberstalking after his alleged victim wrote a petition against him.

Chude NnamdiCSP Muyiwa Adejobi on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of Chude Nnamdi in Onitsha, Anambra State on March 18.

Adejobi is the spokesman for the police.

Era Of Snatching Ballot Box

Chude is popular on social media as a supporter of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

He was arrested after tweeting about Anambra’s ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

He said they brought the state back to the era of ballot box snatching during the recently concluded state election.

That statement is one that people link his arrest to.

They also point fingers at the state’s governor, Charles Soludo, as the man who ordered his arrest.

Cybercrime

But the state government, however, distanced itself from the arrest.

They say he was arrested for allegedly committing cybercrime.

In agreement with the state’s government assertion, the police said Chude breached Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act.

According to the police, that led to his arrest on March 18.

That was the same day the State House of Assembly election took place.

In fact, the police statement read: “he (Chude) is being investigated by the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) Abuja.

He is investigated for cyberstalking, under a complaint received via a petition, about his activities on social media.

These activities contravene the provision of Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 and other criminal laws.

Prima Facie Case

“Furthermore, a prima facie case has been established against him while the case file has been forwarded to the Force Legal Department for further action.

“The Nigeria Police Force, therefore urges members of the public to familiarise themselves with the provisions of the law.

“They must be aware of the penalties for violating them most especially cybercrime laws with the new trends in the digital media space”.
