Peter Obiaand Atiku Abubakar goes to court to inspect election materials

The Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have backed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in their request for a live broadcast of the proceedings of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.

Livy Uzuokwu is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the counsel to the Labour Party and its presidential candidate.

To Clear Doubts 

He announced this desire of the oppositions on Wednesday after the court adjourned pre-hearing sessions in their petition.

Both parties are challenging the election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

According to Uzoukwu, “it has become critical to have the proceedings covered live so that Nigerians can get first-hand information about what is going on in court and clear doubts in the minds of millions of Nigerians.

“The colonial masters initiated live broadcasts of court proceedings, but that they were dropped when Nigeria gained independence, he went on.

“The realities on the ground necessitate a live broadcast of court proceedings, while also declaring that Obi and the Labour Party support Atiku and his party’s request.

“For example, the courtroom cannot comfortably accommodate 200 people, and that 200 people cannot adequately represent Nigerians, adding that Nigerians would be better informed if the proceedings were broadcast live.

“During the hearing of the motion on notice by Atiku and the PDP, the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Mr. Obi, will be fully in support”.

Meanwhile, the Tribunal has scheduled additional pre-hearing sessions in the LP and Obi petition for May 17.

The pre-hearing session was moved at the request of LP and its presidential candidate in order for them to consolidate processes that had already been filed and those that had yet to be filed.
