The general elections of 2023 will be unforgettable to many Nigerians. The divide, fights and intimidations forced the mind of many off the goal of a ‘one Nigeria’.

Some saw ethnicity, others see religion, while many, with the quest to keep their positions and lace their pockets with the wealth of the people, abandoned ethical values for confrontations and segregation.

One ethnic group suffered the most – The Igbos. This is because a man, whom many thought was a ‘social media noise’, came from ‘nowhere’ to become a third force.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party, had reached the peak of political comfort, when young Nigerians found solace in his words. But the aggrieved they called his ideals – the OBIdient Movement – names.

He is not happy.

“No one should ascribe ethnic or religious colouration to the OBIdient Movement.

“Nigeria is one and my ambition is to become the President of a United and Indivisible Nigeria,” Peter Obi emphasises.

This subtle warning from the Labour Party presidential candidate became necessary, as opposition parties and their supporters turn politics into a tribal war.

During the presidential election, some persons did not support Obi because he is of the Igbo tribe.

They claim the OBIdient movement championed by Peter Obi is promoting Igbo presidency.

“The OBIdient Movement has been the arrowhead in the take back Nigeria mission.

It is a statement expected to reach the heart of those promoting ethnicity in politics, and putting their selfish interests before the entire good of the people.

Also, over the weekend, an elder from the eastern part of Nigeria, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, warned that the trend could whip up tribal conflict which will tear the nation apart.

He insists those who who promote the message of division should be made to face the law.

This, he believes, will ensure that there will not be a recurrence of such segregation in the future.
