The pectoral cross was kept in a cabinet in the wall of St. Oswald’s church in Traunstein, Bavaria, where the late Benedict grew up.

Between 11:45 a.m. (0945 GMT) and 5:00 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Monday, thieves broke into the case and stole the object that the former Pope had donated to the church.

“For the Catholic Church, the value of this sacred object cannot be quantified,” stated Bavarian police in a statement.

According to authorities, the perpetrators, whose identities are unknown, also smashed into a cash register at a magazine kiosk and stole the money within.
