An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 rocked the Papua province in Indonesia on Thursday, killing four persons.

According to officials, the four people were inside a floating restaurant when the quake happened and the restaurant collapsed into the sea.

“The bodies of the four victims have been recovered,” National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson, Abdul Muhari says.

“The victims were trapped under the rubble of the cafe and covered by the roof.”

1,079 Earthquakes In 2023

Over 1000 earthquakes have been reported in Indonesia in 2023 with the first being a magnitude of 5.1 recorded on January 2.

1,079 earthquakes were recorded in Jayapura city and areas nearby since the beginning of the year, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency says.

According to the agency, 132 of the earthquakes were strong enough to be felt by residents.
