He had been missing in Antakya since the earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria on 6 February, killing tens of thousands of people.

However, his agent decried the news saying it was yet to be confirmed that he has been rescued.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning,” his agent Nana Sechere said on Twitter.

“My deepest condolences go to his family members and loved ones.

Tribute To A Talented Player

Hearing the sad news, football clubs and fans, teams, and associations began to pay tribute to Atsu.

“You served our Country well, forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace;” the men’s football team, Ghana, Black Stars said.

“We are profoundly saddened to learn that Christian Atsu has tragically lost his life in Turkey’s devastating earthquakes,” Newcastle said.

Newcastle described Atsu as a talented player and a special person noting that he would be remembered by the players, staff, and supporters of the club.

Chelsea also sent their “heartfelt condolences to Christain’s family and friends and to all those affected by the earthquake tragedy”.

Chelsea signed Atsu from Porto in 2013 and he played for the club from 2013 to 2017.

He went on a loan period to Newcastle in 2016. During that period, he helped the team get into Premier League.

He had gone on loan to other clubs including Everton and Bournemouth during his time with Chelsea.

Atsu’s Life Outside Football

Away from football, Atsu was an ambassador for Arms Around the Child, a children’s charity based in Ghana, South Africa and India that provides homes, protection, education and support for children.

Atsu played a big part in building a new education centre in Senya Beraku to help orphaned and trafficked children receive an education.

I also sympathize with the family of Christian Atsu; may his soul rest in peace.
