Tech giant Google has launched a new Android security feature to strengthen call protection.
The tool actively detects and flags suspected impersonation calls in real time across devices.
It arrives as AI voice cloning scams surge globally and cause over $400 billion in losses.

Fake Call Detection Rollout
The feature, called fake call detection, rolls out this month for Android 12 and above.
It first launches on Pixel phones, then expands to other supported Android devices worldwide.
The system runs automatically, so users do not need to enable it manually at any stage.
AI Voice Scam Defence
Google designed this tool to counter rising impersonation fraud driven by AI voice cloning.
Meanwhile, scammers now spoof numbers and imitate voices of relatives, employers, and officials.
The system uses a secure digital handshake that connects devices during active calls.
When both users run Phone by Google, the caller’s device sends a silent encrypted signal.
This signal confirms the call’s authenticity in real time between both devices.
However, if the signal is missing, the device checks directly with the real contact.

If the contact denies making the call, the system immediately warns the user to hang up.
Encrypted Call Verification
The process relies on end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services to ensure full privacy.
Additionally, Google says the open RCS standard encourages wider industry adoption across Android platforms.
The company pushes this approach to raise security standards beyond individual apps and devices.
At the same time, scammers combine caller ID spoofing with AI-generated voice cloning.
As a result, they make scams harder for users to detect using voice alone.
The new feature actively blocks both tactics by verifying calls at system level.
Phone by Google serves as the default dialler on most Android devices globally.
Users can install it from the Play Store and set it as their default app easily.
Finally, users can disable the feature in settings if they prefer manual control.
