Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam 1 or K1 De Ultimate, has formally declared his interest in becoming the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
This follows the passing of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in July 2025.

The development has sparked widespread conversation across Nigeria.
Many debates his suitability for such a highly respected traditional role.
Beyond his celebrity status, Kwam 1 possesses solid traditional, cultural and legal credentials that make him a legitimate and compelling candidate for the Awujale throne.
Here are three key reasons why Kwam 1 is eligible for the royal seat of Ijebuland.
1. He Is of Royal Blood from the Fusengbuwa Ruling House
One of the most important requirements for ascending any first-class traditional throne in Yorubaland is royal lineage, and Kwam 1 meets this criterion convincingly.
The Fuji maestro traced his ancestry to the Jadiara line of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Agunsebi Quarters, Ijebu.
Furthermore, this is one of the recognised ruling houses entitled to produce an Awujale.
In his official letter of intent dated December 3, 2025, he cited both Ijebu customary law and Ogun State chieftaincy laws as the legal basis for his claim.
This confirmation of royal heritage alone automatically qualifies him to be considered for the throne
Also, Kwam 1’s influence goes far beyond entertainment.
For over five decades, he has consistently promoted Yoruba culture, Ijebu traditions, values, language, and history through his music across Nigeria and the diaspora.
His songs are deeply rooted in Yoruba proverbs and philosophy and traditional praise poetry (oríkì)
Also, cultural storytelling and celebration of kingship, lineage and heritage
Through his artistry, Kwam 1 has helped preserve indigenous identity at a time when many cultural values are being lost to westernisation.
3. Maturity, Influence and Leadership Experience
At 68 years old, Kwam 1 brings age, wisdom, influence, and leadership experience to the table, qualities highly valued in Yoruba traditional rulership.
Over the years, he has successfully built a massive brand, managed teams, mentored younger musicians, and maintained relevance across generations.
He holds several national honours and chieftaincy titles.
Also, this reflected long-standing public respect and societal influence.
