Afrobeat musician Made Kuti has opened up about why he chose not to kneel when he proposed to his wife, explaining that he deliberately framed marriage as a partnership based on equality.

Proposal Based On Equality
He shared his story during an episode of the Timeless Podcast on the Nix Network YouTube channel, where he described how the proposal unfolded.
Rather than following tradition, he explained that he and his partner treated the moment as a mutual decision, not a one-sided request.
As a result, he avoided kneeling because, in his view, neither person was “begging” the other to stay in the relationship.

Made Kuti and Inedoye Onyenso later celebrated their union with a private wedding ceremony in Lagos in November 2023.
Importantly, they kept the event low-key and away from public attention, focusing instead on their close circle.
In addition, Kuti revealed that Onyenso had once been his schoolmate, which added a familiar foundation to their relationship long before it turned romantic.
However, in 2025, he faced public criticism over their marriage, especially from people reacting to their different ethnic backgrounds.
In response, he strongly rejected those views and described ethnic prejudice as a “slave mentality”, while reaffirming that he and his wife made their choice freely and with mutual respect.
