The Federal Government has approved a new welfare package granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from security agencies across the country.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat in Abuja.

He noted that the policy was personally approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of his Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the minister, the initiative covers retirees from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
“In recognition of their service, President Tinubu has graciously approved that officers retiring from these senior ranks will henceforth enjoy lifetime salary benefits,” read a statement issued by DCF P.O. Abraham, Head of Corporate Services at the Federal Fire Service.
Tunji-Ojo further revealed that his ministry had successfully cleared a long-standing backlog of promotions, with over 50,000 officers elevated within the last two years.
Also, he assured that future promotions would now be performance- and capacity-driven, ensuring fairness and productivity across agencies.
Training and Modernisation
In his presentation, the minister also announced the development of new training manuals for officers and the commencement of a world-class Fire Academy.
The academy, he said, would rival global institutions like the Arizona Fire Academy, positioning Nigeria as a hub for professional firefighting training.
Focus on Welfare and Partnerships
Beyond financial rewards, Tunji-Ojo stressed the importance of workplace mental health, pledging stronger support systems for officers.
