The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appointed its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the head of the Collation Secretariat and also named the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja as the venue for the National Situation Room and Collation Centre for the 2023 general elections.

The commission made the announcement on Thursday night after the creation of two separate Committees ahead of the polls next month.

The commission’s National Commissioner & Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye in a statement explained that Yakubu is the Chairman of the Collation Secretariat, which is one of the committees by virtue of “his constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the Presidential election. In addition, a few technical staff will assist him.”

Then the second Committee is a 16-member Situation Room and Collation Centre Committee to be led by a National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu.

Stating the duties of that committee, Okoye said the second committee will “be responsible for the preparation of the venue, seating arrangement, utilities and services, security, the accreditation of party agents, as well as the national and international observers, media, etc.”

The Situation Room and Collation Centre Committee, which is headed by the INEC chair has since been inaugurated by the Yakubu “who charged it to commence work in earnest and to discharge its responsibilities diligently.”
