Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu, wants the police to investigate the supplementary election in Adamawa State won by opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

There have been several events following the supplementary gubernatorial election in Adamawa.

In fact, it became the most publicised state governorship election in recent years.

The supplementary election was held on Saturday, April 15 after the March 18 election results were declared inconclusive.

After the election on Saturday, collation began and by Saturday night.

It ended for the day, with the results from 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) yet to be announced.

However, on Sunday morning; the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Yunusa Ari, announced the winner.

The REC announced Aisha Binani Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.

This declaration was done without the collation of the remaining 11 LGAs.

Also, it was done in the absence of the state’s returning officer, Mele Lamido.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) immediately summoned the REC and stopped the collation of results.

On Tuesday, the collation of results resumed and the incumbent Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner.

The final results showed that Binani polled 398,788 votes while Fintiri polled 430,861 votes.

Call For Investigation

Several party chieftains have reacted to the events happening in Adamawa.

Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu, has also called on the police to investigate the supplementary election.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mr Tinubu called for a thorough investigation of “all that transpired” in the election.

“The supplementary polls have now brought the 2023 elections to a final, fitting conclusion.

“I observed, with satisfaction, the largely peaceful atmosphere that pervaded the supplementary election on Saturday.

“It was a further testimony that our citizens have accepted democratic norms and have unalloyed faith in the electoral process,” the statement reads.

“However, I note the matter of Adamawa Supplementary Governorship Election and I urge police authorities to fully investigate all that transpired in the election given the attendant controversy,” he requests.

Furthermore, Mr Tinubu says those that are aggrieved by the results should pursue legitimate means of addressing their grievances.
