If you hear that a woman is the weaker vessel, it reminds you that you should protect them and not hurt them. But a set of persons whose duty it is to protect everyone, crossed the line, assaulting a woman. It is called police brutality. 

Now, a video capturing the moment some police officers assaulted a woman has triggered outrage among Nigerians.

As a result of the viral police brutality, many describe Nigeria as a lawless country, hence the regular unprofessional behavior by officers of the police force.

Nigerians are yet to heal from the death of Bolanle, a Lawyer, who was gunned down by a police officer in Lagos State.

And now, another citizen in Delta has been assaulted.

The incident happened in Nikoro close, near Eghwere road, Agbarho in Delta State.

The Assault

The victim identified as Martha Igbigbi was accosted by the police officers.

Police officers visited her residence to arrest her son but he wasn’t available.

It is common place to find police insist that the relative of an offender should be taken where the offender is not available.

Again, this was the case in the Delta incident of police brutality.

In a viral video, the police officers who were five in number, including a female, ordered her to follow them to their station but she resisted.

The officers subsequently proceeded to assault the woman. They tied her up before bundling her into their vehicle.

The victim who is partly unclad can be heard refusing to enter their vehicle as the police officers continued to dehumanise her.

Delta Police Reacts

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has condemned the policemen responsible for manhandling Martha in a dehumanising manner.

The spokesman for the police in the sate, DSP Bright Edafe, in a statement on Sunday explained that a careful examination of the video clip was conducted.

He says, it was clear and obvious that the policemen acted in an unprofessional manner unbecoming of police officers.

He said the command condemned the act of the policemen in totality.

To him, no citizen deserves to be treated in such a manner, either by the police or anybody.

Punishment

Edafe disclose that the erring police officers serve at Agbarho Division.

He says they have been identified, summoned, and detained at the command headquarters.

The statement read in part: “Their act is not only inexcusable but unpardonable and will not be tolerated by the Command.

“The erring police officers serving at Agbarho Division have been identified, summoned, and detained at the command headquarters.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali has directed that internal disciplinary action be initiated immediately.

“At the end of their orderly room trial, members of the public will be intimated on the outcome.

“The command wishes to reiterate that ‘rope’ is not a police accouterment and as such, should not be used by policemen in whatever guise while carrying out their duty.

“It’s not in the character of the command to dehumanise and trample on the rights of citizens”.

Edafe said the CP assured the public that the erring officers would be decisively dealt with in accordance with the extant laws to serve as a deterrent to others.

It also reiterated that the protection of lives and properties in the state remains the top priority of the command.
