Nigerians are counting their losses, as the scarcity of Naira notes lingers. One sector that is badly hit is the health sector. Indeed, everyone is being careful in order not to lose a good sum of money, as a result of the redesign of the naira.

The process appears very unorgainsed and poorly coordinated. This is causing families agony already.

In Kano, tragedy struck when a pregnant woman simply identified as Shema’u Sani Labaran at the Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital.

There are claims that her death was as a result of negligence from doctors. The unfortunate incident occurred as a result of situation husband had transferred money into the new Naira note policy crisis.

Recounting the tragic incident, the husband of the deceased, Malam Bello Fancy said his wife died after the doctors failed to attend to her due to a delay in the transfer he made to the hospital.

No Alert, No Treatment

Malam Fancy told Freedom Radio that he took his wife to the hospital when she was due for delivery, but the hospital rejected his old naira notes even though they had no POS.

He claimed he transferred the money and got debited, but the doctors on duty didn’t touch his wife, They were waiting to see the alert in their account, which took almost three hours.

“My wife walked into the hospital from our house, but before they received the alert, the pains had doubled and she was already bleeding. Still, they didn’t touch her until after three hours when they received the alert.

“After they admitted her, they discovered that she could not deliver by herself; that she must undergo an operation. I agreed and paid the money; still through transfer. It also delayed for an additional three hours before they received the alert and operated on my wife. Shockingly, the baby was brought out dead and the mother also died.”

Kano Government Verdict On Old Note

However, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Rahila Garba, has denied the allegation.

He says the claim is not the true representation of the incident.

Other patients in the hospital, countered him,  confirming the incident, saying they too encountered problems with payment of hospital bills which delayed services.

This is happening despite the Kano State Government order that old Naira notes should still be in use in the state.

The State government had warned marketers, supermarkets and the public against rejecting old Naira notes in the state.

It says it will shut down and revoke the licence of any business enterprise found in the act.

However, it was gathered from residents that some institutions, including government-owned, fuel stations and marketers have been rejecting the old notes, including hospitals that battle with emergencies.
