In Nigeria, illegal drugs include cannabis, Tramadol, and Diazepam. If caught in possession of any of these drugs, you might run into problems.

A 28-year-old man identified as Olamilekan Adirieje has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour by a federal court in Kaduna for possession of 5.5kg of cannabis.

Adirieje was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on one count of possession of illicit drugs.

According to the NDLEA prosecution council, Mr. T.J. Atserhegh, the defendant committed the offense on January 10, 2023, at Dadinkowa Road, Kawo, Kaduna.

The prosecutor tenders some documents as evidence and also some remnants of the cannabis substance found on Adirieje during the arrest.

He said the offense contravened the provision of Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap 30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

When the charges were read in court, the convict pleaded guilty, begged for leniency, and promised to turn a new leaf.

Delivering the judgement, the presiding judge, Justice Hadiza Shagari, said: “You are hereby sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard Labour.

“The sentence will begin from the date of his arrest”.

Shagari also asked the prosecuting counsel to return the exhibited cannabis to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for destruction.
