The political tussle in Rivers State, between the immediate past Governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara seems to be nowhere near the end.

Indeed, after the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, many people had thought that the oil rich state would go back to the peace it once enjoyed.

But no, things did not return to normal, in fact, it got worse.

I Made A Mistake

The ace politician who spoke on Saturday at the grand civic reception held at Ogu-Bolo in honour of Chief George Thompson Sekibo, shared some fresh details about the political crisis rocking Rivers State.

He begged for God’s forgiveness as well as the people’s forgiveness for making an error in judgment.

Furthermore, the FCT Minister vowed to correct his mistake at the right time.

Wike said: ” I want to say this clearly, in life we have made a mistake. I have made a mistake. I own it up and I say God forgive me.
“I have said all of you forgive me. But we will correct it at the appropriate time. I am a human; I am bound to make a mistake. So, forgive me for making a wrong judgement. So nobody should kill.”

Wike And The History Of Mistakes

This is not the first time Wike is claiming to have made a mistake in politics.

It started in 2016,

Then, Wike supported Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as PDP National Chairman, and later he claimed it was a mistake.

The same was the case with Prince Uche Secondus in 2017.

Before we knew what was happening, Wike said he made a mistake supporting Secondus as the then PDP National Chairman.

Wike’s mistake did not end there.

More Mistakes

In 2019, Wike said he made another mistake for supporting Tambuwal for PDP ticket.

There came 2021 with the same story.

The FCT Minister said he made another mistake by supporting Senator Iyorchia Ayu as PDP National Chairman.

Fast forward to 2024, Wike has claimed that he made another mistake with Fubara.

Charly Boy has predicted that very soon Wike will make another mistake for supporting Tinubu in 2023.

Mistake Maker Of The Century

As we speak, veteran singer and activist, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, better known as Charly Boy, has crowned the FCT Minister, the ‘mistake maker’ of the century.

According to Charly Boy, with the numerous mistakes Wike had claimed to have made, he would soon claim to have made another one by supporting Bola Tinubu in 2023.

You see, several allies of Wike had shown interest in succeeding him, but Governor Wike endorsed his former Accountant-General for the position.

Fubara served Wike for over eight years.

After defeating 16 other contenders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary, Fubara, who secured 721 votes, thanked Wike for his support.

No Retreat, No Surrender

However, after winning the March governorship election, Fubara fell out with Wike, less than six months into his term.

Many people believe that Wike did not make any mistake.

These categories of people are certain that the former governor failed greatly in his plans and was only making excuses for his failure.

We cannot say for sure if this is true or false, but one thing is certain, Fubara is not backing down, and so is Wike.

Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Professor Prince Chinedu Mmom, has resigned as a member of the State Executive Council.

Prince Chinedu who is a loyalist of former governor Nyesom Wike, sent out the resignation letter dated May 15, 2024.

Professor Mmom referenced a “toxic” working environment as his reason for his resignation, stating that such an environment would make it impossible to achieve “my set targets for the Education sector in the State.”

Farewell To Fubara’s Administration

The former Commissioner, however, thanked Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the opportunity to serve in his administration and wished him well.

The letter read, “It is a truism that a calm, safe and friendly environment would stimulate efficient service delivery and enhanced productivity.

“It is however unfortunate to note that my current work space has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favourable environment to enable me realize my set targets for the Education sector in the State.

“There is loss of trust, animosity and sharp division among colleagues in the same cabinet which is unhealthy and very unfortunate.

“I want to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity to serve in your cabinet and wish your administration well.

“Kindly accept the assurances of my esteemed regards.”

Professor Mmom was among the Commissioners that resigned from the Fubara cabinet last year during the heat of the political crisis in the state, before the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

Rivers State Loses Other Commissioners

He returned to the Fubara administration as Commissioner for Education, but has publicly shown that his loyalty lies with the former Governor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Also, two other commissioners have followed suit in resigning from their offices in Rivers state today.

Kano: Man Who Bombed Mosque Reveals Reason Behind Actions

The Kano State Police Command has apprehended the major suspect behind the early morning explosion in a mosque in Gadan village in Gezawa Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, members of the community were observing the “Subhi Prayer” on Wednesday morning, May 15, 2024, when the suspect, Shafi’u Abubakar, set the mosque on fire with petrol and locked it to prevent the worshippers from escaping.

SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the spokesperson of the command who confirmed the arrest, said 24 people sustained various skin burn injuries in the suspected petrol explosion, while deaths were recorded.

Kano PPRO Speaks

According to the PPRO, the suspect confessed to the crime, saying his action was purely in hostility following prolonged family disagreements over the sharing of inheritance.

Also, he claimed that those who cheated him out of the inheritance were in the mosque at that moment, and he carried out the act to voice out his grievance.

“Today, May 15, 2024, at about 0520 hours, reports were received that there was an explosion at a mosque in Gadan Village, Gezawa LGA, Kano State, during “Subhi Prayer,” and that some people got injured,” the statement read.

“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc, immediately deployed the command’s combined teams.

The teams consisted of experts in Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) led by CSP Haruna Isma’il and other crime-scene policemen led by Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Gezawa Division, CSP Haruna Iliya.

The Revenge Mission

“The scene was cordoned off, and twenty-four (24) victims, including 20 male adults and 4 male children, were removed and rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano, where they are currently receiving treatment.

“Forensic analysis at this preliminary stage revealed a suspected petrol explosion, for which a full investigation is ongoing.

“The principal suspect has been identified and arrested; he is Shafi’u Abubakar, aged 38, who said his action was purely in hostility.

According to him, his outburst followed a prolonged family disagreement over the sharing of inheritance.

Car importers’ Plea

The Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON) has asked the government to let people bring cars from other countries through the land borders again.

The boss of the AMDON group in Sokoto State, Manaur Zagi, made the request during a meeting with the Nigerian Customs Service. The meeting was held on Tuesday, May 15.

Both parties talked about a special time when people can pay the right taxes for their cars brought into Nigeria.

The AMDON boss said the border closure caused a lot of trouble and made many people lose their jobs in the car business.

This made the situation worse in the Northwest part of Nigeria.

“We think if the government lets us bring cars through the land borders again, it will be easier for people to do business. It will also help to stop illegal smuggling,” he said.

Kamal Mohammad, who is in charge of the Customs in the area, said the car importers Association is important in bringing and selling cars in Nigeria. He said they chose members of the association for the meeting because they were key players in the car business.

FG Rules To Car Importers

The government gave a 90-day time from March 4, 2024, to July 5, 2024, for people to pay the right taxes for their cars without getting into trouble. This is part of the Customs’ plan to make sure people follow the rules.

“We appreciate the work the association does in bringing and selling cars in Nigeria.

The 90-day time given for people to pay the right taxes for their cars is a chance for everyone to do the right thing,” Kamal said.

He also said the government’s rule to stop bringing cars through the land borders was a decision about taxes, but they will talk to the big bosses about AMDON’s request.

During the meeting, they discussed the two kinds of cars covered by the 90-day time: cars brought into Nigeria without paying the right taxes, and cars kept because they were not valued correctly.

People who want to pay the right taxes for their cars need to go through a Customs Agent and submit the right documents to the Customs offices, he remined the car importers.

The Katsina Hisbah Corps, has reportedly arrested one Jamil Mabai, a journalist working with Trust TV, the television broadcasting arm of Media Trust Group.

The Hisbah Corps is a religious police force responsible for the enforcement of Shari’a to only Muslims in Katsina.

According to reports, the Sharia corps arrested the TV journalist over a social media post.

In the said post, Mabai allegedly criticised the human rights violations against youths in the state.

Journalism Is Not A Crime

Taking to his X handle @Edrees4P, a fellow journalist wrote: “Hisbah in Katsina arrested a journalist @jaymb000 over his post on Facebook criticizing their unjust detainment and human rights violations against youth in the state.

“Jamilu is a reporter for Trust Tv in Katsina. Remember, journalism is not a crime.”

Confirming his arrest via the microblogging platform on Wednesday morning, Mabai recounted how he was arrested and detained.

The Interview

The journalist revealed that it happened when he visited Hisbah’s office to interview the Public Relations Officer (PRO).

Instead of granting him the interview, he was arrested and detained.

According to him, the supposed interview was based on a particular DJ who was shot by Hisbah officials last week.

However, he was thrown into custody.

Journalist Recounts Experience

Mabai wrote on X: “How I was detained by Katsina Hisbah officials when I visited their office to conduct a follow-up interview with the PRO.

“Hisbah, has banned the activities of DJs at events in Katsina.

Last week Friday, Mallam Gambo, a resident of Katsina, died from a gunshot wound sustained while Hisbah officials were trying to shut down a wedding with a DJ.”

“The shots were fired by an operative of the Community Watch Corp tasked with defending communities against bandits.

The Setup

“Following this incident, I contacted the Katsina Hisbah Public Relations Officer (PRO) to request a follow-up interview regarding Mallam Gambo’s death.

Upon my arrival at the Hisbah office, I couldn’t find the PRO. Unknown to me, it was a setup.”

“Hisbah officers approached me, claiming they were instructed to detain me.

Despite explaining that I was a journalist there for an interview, they insisted and confiscated my phone before holding me in a cell.

A Fight With Religion

“Later, I was brought before the commandant’s office.

“He threatened me, he said, “I am fighting with religion, and there is nothing I or anybody can do against the activities of Hisbah”.

After an hour, I was released. The entire ordeal raises serious concerns.

Press Freedom

I informed them that detaining a journalist on their premises without a reason or opportunity to provide a statement is a clear violation of press freedom.”

Our finding shows that Mabai is known for reporting insecurity in the northern region.

Also, he reports stories infringing on the human rights of citizens, who must get justice as stipulated in the Constitution.
