Lassa fever claims 3 lives in Rivers State

Three persons are now feared dead of the Lassa Fever virus in Rivers state, South South, Nigeria.

The Director Planning, Research and Statistics of the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Chinwe Atata confirmed the development while addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt.

Chinwe who assured that all hands are on deck to ensure rapid containment of the outbreak, enjoined the public to continue all necessary preventive measures under the circumstances.

She said the Rivers State Government is doing everything to contain the spread of the Lassa virus.

“Recently, I briefed you on the state of Lassa Fever in the state and I told you that we are diagnosing some of the suspected cases. So, I called you to inform you that three of those cases were positive.

“The Rivers state Public Health Emergency Operations Centre had earlier commenced proactive efforts for containment of the outbreak. So far, all hands are on deck to contain it. So far, they have done facility decontamination and presumptive profilaxis to ensure public health safety and security.

“In addition, the state has procured large quantities of anti viral agents, isolation centres have been provided and are being set up across the Teaching Hospitals in case of emergencies.

“The Rivers state government is doing everything to ensure the containment if the virus so I assure you that there is no cause for alarm.
