On Wednesday, May 1, while Daniel Ojukwu joined his colleagues to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day, some officers of the Nigeria Police were busy tracking him.

That was how Ojukwu was secretly abducted in Lagos.

Ojukwu was in detention for nine days before being given access to his phones, in fact, he was declared missing at some point.

Order From Above

Ojukwu’s arrest and the story behind it sparked nothing but outrage among Nigerians, especially when they got to know that it was an ‘order from above’.

Things got more heated when Daniel Ojukwu was transferred to Abuja. That was when it dawned on Nigerians that if they do not act fast, things might go wrong.

A coalition of civil society groups and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore staged a protest at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to demand for his release.

Other Nigerians showed their solidarity via social media, demanding for his release in one voice.

The Final Decision

However, on Thursday, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations, DIG Ayuba Ede, spoke to journalists.

It was during a closed-door meeting at the Force Headquarters.

There, Ede promised to submit the demand of the protesters to Egbetokun and the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the FCID, Abiodun Alabi.

According to him, while details of the petition and the ongoing police investigation needed to be reviewed, the final decision on the release of journalist Ojukwu would be based on the discretion of the IGP.

Now, a day after the protest in Abuja, Daniel Ojukwu has regained his freedom.
