Few hours to Saturday’s governorship and Sate House of Assembly elections, the quest for the governorship seat in Oyo State is getting hotter.
It is a dangerous time in the state, as people with desperate desire to grab power begin to explore alternative means.
These alternatives are not friendly ones.
In fact, they involve attempts to take the life of an opponent.
Unfortunately, it is not new to some politicians because it appears to be part of the political structure in Nigeria.
In Oyo State, Teslim Folarin almost became a victim.
Folarin is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.
On Thursday, he escaped an assassination attempt in Ibadan, the capital of the state.
Masked Gunmen
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Folarin, Yekeen Olaniyi, confirms the attack in an interview with Punch.
Olaniyi says, some masked gunmen invaded his principal’s ancestral home at Oja’gbo area in the Ibadan North-East Local Government area of the state around 8:00PM in search of Folarin who had a scheduled meeting with his family members.
Olaniyi said: “Oga escaped an assassination attempt on his life this evening. He had a scheduled meeting with his family members at Oja’gbo.
“As you are aware, he is the one representing his family at the Olubadan line as Asaju Olubadan.

“So, he was supposed to hold the meeting between 6:30 and 7:00PM but because he was on air at a radio station, he couldn’t meet up at that time.
“He didn’t leave the radio station until around 8:40PM. So, the gunmen invaded the area around 8:00PM, thinking that he was there and started shooting sporadically and wounded many people.”

Olaniyi calls on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, through the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Williams, and other security agencies to beef up security around the APC governorship candidate.
