Why They Were Protesting

Protests sprung across Iran in September 2022, following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini.

Amini, a 22-year-old woman, was detained by morality police for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly.

Four protesters have been executed by hanging since December and 107 others have either been sentenced to death or charged with capital offences.

For expressing solidarity with the protesters, Iran international chess player Sara Khadem and her husband were exiled.

The chess player has chosen to play at an international event without her headscarf.

Khadem had said many people only wore the headscarf in front of cameras and she considered it hypocrisy.

However, the Iranian government do not seem to agree with her logic, as she has now officially gone into exile with her husband and son.
