Indonesian officials have revealed that the country’s new legislation to ban sex outside marriage does not apply to tourists.

The country is set to pass new legislation called the ‘Bali bonking ban’ that threatens up to a year in prison for unmarried couples who have sex.

Although the legislation may take up to three years before it is implemented fully, concerns have been raised over how the law may affect tourists.

The governor of Bali, a holiday hotspot however reassured that the law does not bind tourists and that should not stop tourists from visiting the country.

The governor, Wayan Koster, said tourists would not be asked to provide marriage certificates or prove their marital status when checking into accommodation.

He reassured that “Bali is Bali as usual, which is comfortable and safe to be visited”.

The Indonesian deputy justice minister, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej also assured that foreigners would not be prosecuted.

“I want to emphasize for foreign tourists, please come to Indonesia because you will not be charged with this article,” he said.
