Now, that position is held by President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria.

He is the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.

President Tinubu was elected chairman at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held on Sunday afternoon, July 9, in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau.

After receiving his handover documents from the outgoing chairman and President Umaro Embaló of  Guinea-Bissau, Tinubu said: “We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the form of government”.

President Tinubu’s Role As ECOWAS Chairman

1. As the ECOWAS chairman, he will ensure the conflict in West Africa is resolved

2. Apart from resolutions, he will play the function of liaising with other president of government of ECOWAS commission.

3. Tinubu will also liaise with people responsible for the management and implementation of ECOWAS policies.

4. As the ECOWAS chairman, President Tinubu will ensure that democracy is being promoted in West Africa.

ECOWAS Summit

The summit of the ECOWAS heads of state is expected to address memoranda on pressing sub-regional issues.

They include a report of the 50th ordinary session of the mediation and security council covering security challenges faced by the member countries.

Report of the 90th ordinary session of ECOWAS council of ministers on the financial situation of the body.

Also, it will consider the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Another thing it will look into is the report on the status of transition in Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea.
