Nigeria’s Box Office tells a story of steady recovery and renewed audience interest in 2026, as cinemas welcomed 752,136 admissions in Q1, marking a six-year high.

Nigeria’s Box Office Audience Return Gains Momentum
Meanwhile, audiences returned to cinemas after several difficult years, driving the recovery.
In Q1 2025, admissions reached 661,720, showing gradual growth.
Earlier, figures fell to 597,061 in 2024 and 620,477 in 2023.
These declines reflected economic pressure and shifting viewing habits.
Nollywood Drives Market Growth
As the recovery continued, content choices also shaped the market.
Nollywood films dominated the box office, accounting for over 553,000 admissions.
This figure represents 73.5% of total ticket sales in Q1 2026.
In particular, two films stood out, as they drew strong audiences across major cinema circuits nationwide.
Behind The Scenes and Oversabi Aunty showcased the strength of Nigerian storytelling and deepened audience connection.
Furthermore, financial performance mirrored this growth, as both films achieved major box office milestones.
Toyin Abraham directed Oversabi Aunty, which crossed ₦1 billion at the box office.
Similarly, Funke Akindele produced Behind The Scenes, which has earned about ₦2.7 billion since release.

Revenue Growth Outpaces Attendance
However, the industry’s growth does not rely only on rising attendance.
Instead, it depends on strategy, pricing, and release planning. Industry reports suggest these factors will shape future growth.
At the same time, admissions will rise gradually from 2.6 million in 2023 to 2.95 million in 2026.
This trend shows a stabilising market despite ongoing economic challenges that affect consumers.
In contrast, revenue growth tells a stronger story, as earnings rise faster than attendance.
Gross box office revenue increased from ₦7.36 billion in 2023 to ₦11.58 billion in 2024.
It then climbed further to ₦15.64 billion in 2025.
Looking ahead, Nigeria’s cinema industry targets ₦20 billion in 2026.
This shift signals a new phase of growth, driven by strategy, creativity, and audience engagement.
