The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced a major boost to the nation’s electricity supply with the addition of 600 megawatts to the national grid following the completion of a key transmission infrastructure project in Edo State.
The development was revealed on Thursday by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, during the commissioning ceremony of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project.
According to Abdulaziz, the newly completed project is expected to significantly strengthen Nigeria’s power transmission capacity and improve the movement of electricity from the Ihovbor Transmission Substation to various distribution centres nationwide.
He explained that the project involved connecting the existing Benin–Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line directly to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, creating two additional transmission routes stretching about 14 kilometres in total.
Abdulaziz noted that the project would improve the operational efficiency and flexibility of the national transmission network, especially within the Benin power corridor.
He added that the upgraded infrastructure now allows TCN to evacuate electricity more effectively from major generation plants, including the Azura Power facility and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company plant.
Benefits Of The Improvement
The TCN boss said the improvement would ease long-standing transmission constraints, strengthen grid stability and increase the volume of electricity available to distribution companies across the country.
“With this project now completed, we have successfully added 600 megawatts to the national grid,” Abdulaziz stated.
He further explained that the enhanced grid structure would enable electricity generated from the Benin axis to be transmitted seamlessly to different parts of Nigeria, ensuring more efficient nationwide power delivery.
Abdulaziz described the initiative as another important step towards building a more resilient and reliable electricity transmission system capable of supporting Nigeria’s growing energy demands.
He also stressed that the project reflects TCN’s continued commitment to innovation, infrastructure expansion and collaboration with stakeholders in the power sector.

According to him, the completion of the transmission link means electricity generated in the region that previously could not be fully evacuated can now be transmitted to consumers more effectively, ultimately improving power supply for Nigerians.
“This project ensures that more generated power can now be evacuated and delivered to homes and businesses, translating to better electricity supply across the country,” he said.
