The Federal Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of a mining site in Plateau State following a deadly incident that claimed the lives of at least 37 villagers in the Zurak community of Wase Local Government Area.
According to reports, the tragedy unfolded when a group of young miners working inside an underground shaft were overwhelmed by toxic fumes believed to have accumulated in inadequately ventilated tunnels.
Most of the victims were reportedly between the ages of 20 and 35.

In addition to those who lost their lives, about 25 others were rushed to nearby medical facilities after inhaling what authorities suspect to be carbon monoxide.
Reacting to the development, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, directed the suspension of activities at Mining Licence 11810, operated by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited.
The licence, owned by Abdullahi Dan-China, covers a designated mining area within Wase.
The Suspension
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued in Abuja by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori.
During a condolence visit to the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, Alake described the incident as deeply saddening, noting that the victims were young Nigerians striving to earn a lawful living.
He urged the governor to extend the Federal Government’s sympathy and support to the bereaved families and the wider Wase community.
To determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal gas exposure, the minister has constituted a high-powered investigative panel led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Yusuf Yabo.
The team comprises experts in mining engineering, environmental protection, and artisanal mining operations.

The panel has been tasked with identifying both the immediate and root causes of the disaster, as well as recommending corrective measures and potential sanctions where necessary.
Authorities say further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
