The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has completed preparations for the 2027 general elections, including a detailed timetable and schedule of activities.

INEC Finalizes 2027 Election Timetable, Schedule Of Activities

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a consultative meeting with representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). He said the commission has already concluded its internal planning and is fully prepared to conduct the next general elections.

However, Amupitan noted that aspects of the timetable may still be adjusted, depending on the final outcome of the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act by the National Assembly.

According to him, INEC has submitted its recommendations to lawmakers and is closely monitoring developments at the legislature.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the proposed legal changes, the INEC chairman assured stakeholders that the commission’s preparations are firmly anchored on the provisions of the current Electoral Act and that it remains ready to proceed under the existing legal framework if necessary.

Meanwhile, efforts to amend the Electoral Act suffered another setback on Tuesday as the Senate failed to conclude deliberations on the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026. Lawmakers spent over four hours reviewing the report of a seven-member ad hoc committee but ended the session without reaching a final decision.

The Senate had begun consideration of the committee’s consolidated report during plenary before moving into a closed-door session to examine the submissions in detail.

When the session resumed, Senate President Godswill Akpabio did not reveal the outcome of the discussions, opting instead to adjourn plenary to the next legislative sitting.
