Vince Zampella, the acclaimed co-creator of the blockbuster video game franchise Call of Duty, has died following a fatal car accident, gaming giant Electronic Arts confirmed on Monday, December 22, 2025. He was 55.

According to reports, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said Zampella was driving when his vehicle veered off a scenic mountain road north of Los Angeles on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
The cherry-red Ferrari reportedly struck a concrete barrier, overturned and burst into flames.
Both Vince Zampella and a passenger were ejected from the vehicle and later died from their injuries.
Videos shared online by witnesses showed the mangled remains of the luxury sports car engulfed in flames as emergency responders arrived at the scene.
Authorities said the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Zampella was widely regarded as a pioneering figure in the global gaming industry and a key architect of the first-person military shooter genre.
He co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002 and helped launch Call of Duty in 2003, a franchise that has grown into one of the most successful in entertainment history, attracting more than 100 million active players monthly.
Following Activision’s acquisition of Infinity Ward, Zampella went on to found Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind hit titles such as Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series.
His death marks a significant loss to the gaming world, where his influence continues to shape modern game design and storytelling.
