Christmas Travel Inflate Bus Fares

Bus operators have already raised fares, with tickets currently ranging from ₦25,500 to ₦73,500, depending on destination and vehicle type.

They warn that prices will climb sharply from December 18, when travellers increase demand during the festive rush.

Travellers must choose between smaller, no-frills buses without AC or premium buses offering more comfort and reliability.

Premium operators provide AC, TV screens, spacious padded seats, and scheduled departures at higher prices, attracting travellers seeking convenience.

At Ikorodu, a ticketing clerk explained that operators raise fares gradually by ₦1,000 to ₦1,500 until they reach peak festive levels.

Last December, a 15-seater costing ₦32,000 eventually sold for about ₦41,500, illustrating the yearly surge during Christmas travel.

This year, 15-seater fares could rise to ₦30,600–₦67,600, while 7-seaters might range from ₦55,000 to ₦93,600 for larger, more comfortable vehicles.

Demand And Operational Costs

High demand and limited seat availability drive these rising fares across the South-East routes.

A park manager at Iyana Ipaja said, “When buses return empty, higher fares offset operational costs.”

December heat increases vehicle wear, and drivers must replace tyres costing around ₦40,000 each.

Fuel costs also rise; 7-seaters cannot complete trips without refuelling, often paying over ₦1,000 per litre outside Lagos.

Alternatives And Advice

Airlines charge over ₦350,000 for tickets to Enugu, Owerri, or Aba, making buses the main alternative.

Since no rail service connects Lagos to the South-East, road transport remains the most practical and accessible option.

Buses continue to drive festive travel, offering flexibility, comfort options, and scheduled departures.

Travellers should plan early or risk paying significantly higher fares during Christmas.
