Explosion tore through Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, Wednesday evening.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited confirmed the blast and reported that it disrupted pipeline operations, alarming local residents.

Gas Pipeline Explosion Shakes Local Communities
It happened around 5:50 PM, causing a sudden pressure drop along the NGIC-operated pipeline.
Consequently, emergency response teams immediately mobilised to secure the area.
Authorities are still investigating the exact cause, but NNPC assured communities that they prioritise safety and environmental protection.
NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, stated, “We are working closely with local leaders to protect residents and the environment.”
Pipeline’s Role And Reach
The Escravos–Lagos Pipeline, built in 1989, transports natural gas from Delta State to the Egbin power station near Lagos.

Moreover, although the line begins at NGC’s gas treatment plant in Warri, it carries gas from Chevron’s Escravos Gas Plant.
Chevron produces 680 million cubic feet (19 million cubic metres) of gas daily, which powers South-western stations.
Additionally, the pipeline supplies the West African Gas Pipeline System, a crucial part of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline.
Ongoing Response And Concerns
Earlier in March 2025, an explosion on the Trans-Niger crude oil pipeline in Rivers State disrupted exports to the Bonny Terminal.
Now, the latest blast has left residents anxious, while emergency teams continue monitoring the area and working to prevent environmental damage.
NNPC promised to release updates as investigators determine the cause.
For communities along the pipeline, the explosion highlights the risks that energy infrastructure can bring.
