Singer and pastor Olubankole “Banky W” Wellington has called for balance in the ongoing debate about church teachings on wealth.
He cautioned Nigerians against broad generalisations while condemning excesses found in some religious groups.
During a recent public conversation, Banky W observed that discussions around the “prosperity gospel” have become highly polarised.
Also, many are assuming that the misconduct of a few represents the entire Christian community.
He stressed that both extremes prosperity preaching and the so-called poverty gospel distort true biblical teaching.
According to him, “The prosperity gospel is false and corrupted, and the poverty gospel is also false and corrupted. What the gospel says is that God will meet your needs and bless you enough to bless others.”
The music executive added that societal expectations that Christians must either become billionaires or accept hardship are equally misguided.
“The promise is not that we must all be Dangote or Otedola, and it’s also not that we are meant to sleep under the bridge,” he said.
Acknowledging that a segment of the church has abused these teachings, Banky W urged Nigerians not to label all churches unfairly.

“There’s a segment of the church that has taken it and abused it — those allegations are true. But it doesn’t mean everyone is guilty,”he noted.
