The family of the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad, has formally barred his widow, Wunmi, from using their surname, Aloba, until the ongoing paternity dispute involving their son, Liam, is resolved.

In an official statement jointly signed by the family head, Omolayo Aloba, and the late singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, the family declared that Wunmi is prohibited from using the Aloba name pending the outcome of a DNA test.
The restriction comes amid the lingering controversy over the paternity of Wunmi’s son.
The family insists that a DNA test is necessary before Wunmi or Liam can be recognised in matters relating to the Aloba name or Mohbad’s estate.
Unresolved Questions Around Mohbad’s Death
This development adds to ongoing issues surrounding Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023.
The singer died after receiving an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse.
Following public outcry, his body was exhumed for autopsy, but in May 2025, pathologists reported that the cause of death could not be determined.
Family Claims No Legal Marriage Took Place
In their latest statement, the Aloba family argued that Wunmi was not legally married to Mohbad.
They stated: “For the avoidance of doubt, no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed.”
New Legal Representatives Appointed
The family also announced the appointment of Oladayo Ogungbe as the sole legal representative for the DNA case and for matters related to Mohbad’s estate.
They added that lawyer Wahab Shittu would continue to handle all engagements with investigative authorities regarding Mohbad’s death.
Estate Access Dependent on DNA Confirmation
According to the statement, both Wunmi and Liam will be included in the administration of Mohbad’s estate only if the DNA test confirms Liam as the late singer’s biological son.
