Tomeka Thiam, wife of global music superstar Akon, has officially filed for divorce just days before their 29th wedding anniversary.
Court records filed on September 11, 2025, in Fulton County, Georgia.
The file shows that Thiam cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for ending the nearly three-decade-long marriage.
The couple, who share a daughter, were preparing to mark their 29th anniversary.
In her petition, Thiam requested joint legal custody, with primary physical custody granted to her, while allowing visitation rights for Akon.
She is also seeking spousal support, while rejecting Akon’s request for the same.
Neither party has released a public statement since the filing.
This development comes as Akon continues to stand by his views on polygamy.
This is a subject he has openly defended in past interviews.
In a 2022 appearance on The Zeze Mills Show, Akon described polygamy as a natural aspect of his cultural background, saying:
“(Polygamy is) part of our culture. Absolutely. For me, it looks normal, because it’s culture for us… The flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account.”
The Senegalese-American artiste has nine children, has previously discussed balancing his busy career with family life.
He admitted that while his professional commitments often keep him away, he prioritises providing financially for his children.
“Me showing up for my children is me being there for them financially,” Akon once said.
“I’m there if I’m around. But it’s impossible to be everywhere. Technology allows me to be there every day.”
