According to the Nigerian police and many others, Seun Kuti did the “unthinkable” by slapping a policeman on duty.
This singular act has put him on the wrong side of the law. He has been remanded by the court for an additional 48 hours.
Also, the police are now thoroughly investigating him for other evidences.
Regardless of what may have caused the provocation that resulted in him slapping the police officer, his action remains unjustifiable.
Seun Kuti’s Background
However, we need to take cognisance of the fact that we are emotional beings, of which Seun Kuti is not an exception.
The 40-year-old has had encounters with the Nigerian police and military that left him with scars at a very tender age.
For instance, in 1977, soldiers stormed the Kuti family property (Kalakuta Republic) in Lagos. They beat up Seun’s 77-year-old grandmother, Olufunmilayo Kuti.

Afterwards, his father, Fela Kuti, carried her coffin to Dodan barracks in tears.
As we write, nobody has been punished for the crime against her.
Sadly, they beat his father to within an inch of his life many times.
Also, they burned down their residence, multiple vets, and other property.
Sadly, the Kuti’s were never compensated.
The police raided the shrine episodically, from when Seun was a baby to his adulthood.
Anger Or Scars?
Indeed, what Seun Kuti passed through in his childhood could have been a stimulant for his despising the same security agency whose duty it is to protect citizens.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Kuti is charged with assaulting a police officer.
“However, he is being granted bail of one million Naira with two sureties in like sum at the end of the 48-hour remand.
“One of the sureties must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.
