The Federal Government of Nigeria has urged Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke to postpone the Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, citing a recent Appeal Court ruling.

Osun, Ademola AdelekeAttorney General of the Federation (AGF)
Lateef Fagbemi made this known while addressing the ongoing political crisis in the state.

He clarified that the Appeal Court’s February 10, 2025, judgment effectively reinstated previously elected local government officials, whose tenure will now run until October 2025.

Fagbemi criticized Adeleke’s insistence on holding new elections, warning that such a move would be unconstitutional and could lead to legal and political instability.

In addition, he emphasized that Governor Adeleke must ensure a smooth and lawful transition in line with the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on local government autonomy.
