While the Tribunal is ongoing, the Federal Government is taking its time to reaffirm that  the unresolved legal disputes over the results of the presidential election on February 25 cannot prevent Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima from taking office on May 29.

Tinubu’s victory is currently being contested at the presidential election petition court by Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who placed third and second in the poll, respectively.

According to certain analysts and observers, Tinubu should not be permitted to assume office until the petition hearings are over.

But the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, is opposed to that opinion.

There Have Been Litigations

He spoke at a World News Conference to begin the inauguration festivities on Thursday in Abuja.

“Without any fear of contradiction, there will be inauguration on May 29,” he said.

“This is not the first time. There was litigation following the election of previous President Shehu Shagari, but the country nonetheless carried out the inauguration.

“Also, there was litigation during the election of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but we nevertheless carried through the swearing-in.

“Only former President Goodluck Jonathan chose not to pursue legal action.”

Also, Mustapha, who is also the Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC), declared: “There will be an inauguration as long as the Lord delays.

“The Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution both provided sufficient guidance on how to handle legal disputes resulting from elections”.

Mustapha stated that “a significant number of heads of state had expressed interest in attending the inauguration.

However, for security considerations, he chose not to mention those who had been confirmed to attend.

“Due to the uncertain times we are in right now, diplomatic privileges do not permit us to publicise the number of presidents or who is coming.

“However, there is a desire and enthusiasm to visit Nigeria and aid in maintaining its democracy, we have an obligation to do it correctly.”

The inauguration of president election Bola Tinubu on May 29 will mark Nigeria’s seventh straight democratic transfer of power.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 16th president will take office on that same day.
