Vote Buying: PDP House Of Reps Member Arrested With $500,000

The Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies have launched a war against vote buying ahead of the forthcoming election.

So far, the strategy adopted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security agencies seem to be yielding positive results.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is also actively part of the push to tackle votes buying during the 2023 elections.  

It is this war that has landed a Rivers State member of the House of Representatives, Chinyere Igwe in police custody.

Igwe, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was arrested with $500,000 in Rivers State.

War Against Votes Buying

The operatives of the Rivers State Police Command, discovered the $500,000 with the lawmaker. 

Reports say the hard currency was allegedly given to him by the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar.

Igwe, is a loyalist of Atiku Abubakar. He was arrested along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the State’s capital.

Also, apart from the foreign currency in his possession, the Police also found other things.

The lawmaker had a list of how the money will be shared. 

Most beneficiaries are voters in the 23 local government areas of Rivers State.

Also, security agencies and the INEC are also part of the beneficiaries in the list.

Igwe’s arrest comes barely 72 hours after the building housing his two media outfits, the Wish FM and the Atlantic Television Network were rocked by an explosion.

As at the time of filing this report, the Presidential Campaign Council of the PDP is yet to issue an official statement on the development.
