The 5 million Naira fine that the National Broadcasting Commission recently imposed on the Channels Television station has prompted a response from Television presenter, Seun Okinbaloye.

He responded to the 5 million Naira fine by stating that “the media will not be silenced as Nigeria belongs to everyone”.

Trouble began for the award winning television on March 22, during one of Channels Television’s interview which featured Dr. Datti Ahmed-Baba.

He stated on national television that it will be unconstitutional to swear in an elected president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on May 29, 2023.

Critics are saying that the NBC fined the Channels Television after receiving a petition from the president-elect, Bola Tinubu on the interview.

Tinubu’s Petition

The knowledge of the NBC letter stating the fine came to limelight after the President-elect, Asíwájú Bola Tinubu, had petitioned the NBC, requesting that it should sanction Channels Television for allegedly breaching the Nigerian Broadcasting Code.

That petition read: “In line with Section 14.0.1 of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code 6th edition stating the duty of the National Broadcasting Commission to accept complaints from aggrieved persons, bodies or members of the public and investigate as well as apply sanctions where necessary, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council hereby petitions the Commission on what it considers breaches by CHANNELS TV last week on its programme ‘Politics Today’ which airs daily at 7:00pm on weekdays”.
