An adviser to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has denounced what he calls an attempt to blackmail the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa.

Daniel Bwala, Atiku’s media aide, made the comment in response to an allegation against Bawa made by Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle.

Matawalle claimed that Bawa had requested $2 million from him, implying that the investigation against him was due to his failure to offer the requested money to the EFCC chairperson.

However, the EFCC refuted the claim, stating that it would not engage in a mudslinging match with a suspect under investigation for corruption and misappropriation of his state’s resources.

In response to this news, Bwala criticized the attempt to blackmail Bawa and called for a more honorable approach if there is a desire to remove Bawa as EFCC chair.

“If you wish to remove Bawa as the EFCC chair, do so with integrity and in an honorable manner,” Bwala tweeted.

“The act of blackmailing one of the suspects by investigating outgoing governors and cabinet members is, to say the least, disgraceful.

“Bawa, in addition to continuing the success of Magu, has taken the commission to a more professional level, earning praise from various sources. He deserves respect and recognition, not blackmail.

“If you have evidence against him, follow due process instead of resorting to blackmail.”
