The Nigeria Police Force has arrested three officers captured in a viral video brutally assaulting a yet-to-be-identified man in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In a viral video that is whipping up sentiments similar to those expressed with the #EndSARS campaign, a police officer is seen flogging an unarmed citizen with a cane.
After few strokes, he followed up with a thundering slap on the man’s cheek.
Other officers faced the lady that accompanied the man forcing her into the vehicle.
It was indeed a day of abuse at the Emouha Junction along East West Road in Port Harcourt.
The Arrest
The video stirred numerous reactions from Nigerians, with many condemning the act.
Following widespread condemnation of the assault, the Rivers Commissioner of Police, Okon Effiong, ordered the arrest of the officers.
Providing an update on the incident, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who earlier condemned the action of the officers, says they have been apprehended.
“These men have been arrested, and their commander will personally bring them to the Force Headquarters tomorrow Tuesday for further actions.
“They are 3 in number, attached to RRS, Rivers State. Their action does not portray the police in a good light at all.
“It is still to buttress my point that whatever a policeman does is personal, not systemic.

“I wonder how a man, a reasonable man, would be flogging or slapping a grown-up man in that manner. So barbaric and unpolice,” he said.
Punishment
However, to many Nigerians, arresting the officers is not just enough, they should be punished for their crimes.
In fact, many persons say that the Police is just arresting the officers for formality, as no punishment of any kind would be given to them.
All they are demanding is that their punishment should be made public.

These group of people claim “that is the reason they continue assaulting citizens knowing they will not be prosecuted”.
