The legislation is expected to be approved on Friday, December 9.

If approved, the legislation would allow adults only if their wish is “current and reiterated, serious, free and informed”, to be allowed to have assisted suicide known as euthanasia.

The legislation would provide that the person willing to commit suicide must be “in a situation of great intensity suffering, with definitive injury of extreme gravity or serious and incurable disease”.

If approved, Portugal will also be only Europe’s fourth country to allow for assisted suicide.

Opinion polls confirm that roughly half of the voters in the country are in support of the legislation but the Church is against it.

The centre-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) called for a suspension of the legislative process and a referendum holding but it was rejected.
