Two men were detained by the police in Benue State for reportedly burying an elderly man alive after accusing him of practising witchcraft.
The incident occurred at Ikyve, a small village in the state’s Konshisha Local Government.
Police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, told reporters on Wednesday in Makurdi, the state’s capital, that Ihwakaa Ikyve, an elderly man, was allegedly buried alive.
He was accused of witchcraft by a furious group of young people.

It was claimed that an elderly man sent lightning to his two sons and wife, and he was buried alive as punishment.
One of the sons was just two-month-old.
On Sunday, after a rainfall in the area, the deceased were struck by lightning.
After the occurrence, some young people in the neighbourhood accused the man of using witchcraft to hurt people.
Also, he was accused of ordering lightning to murder his family.
“The irate youth went and buried him alive and he died in the grave before he was rescued.
“Police are investigating the incident. We have arrested two people already.” Mrs Anene said.

According to Mr. Agan, a resident of the community, the incident sparked a mob action in which the teenagers assaulted the individual and buried him alive before the police unearthed him dead.
He expressed regret that the individual passed away before authorities could exhume his body from the cemetery.
